I'm gonna be a four-eyes

My eye doctor visit the other day has resulted in glasses. According to my optometrist, it's all a part of being in our 40s.

Whatever.

I've had eye contacts before, but they weren't very successful, and as of last spring, I couldn't stand to wear them because my eyes had changed so much. And now, only glasses will do, as I only have to wear them when I'm working on the computer and reading small print.

It's because of too much time in front of a computer. I've been having trouble reading the words across the bottom of the television screen and having hellacious headaches that only get better when I close my eyes and turn out the lights. My eyes simply hurt.

So yep, I'm gonna be a four eyes. The inner-geek in me opted for the perfectly round John Lennon replica frames from Brooks Brothers Eye Wear. They make me look like a librarian, but that's ok, because the Captain says he likes the idea of taking off my glasses and letting my hair down.

Since I wear my hair like Sarah Palin's quite often, I did try her style of frames, but they didn't look right with my face shape at all, so it's the roundies for me. I like them, I guess. I figure if I'm going to wear glasses, then I want them to be distinctive and have some character.

I'm off to the dentist now. It's supposed to be just a cleaning, but who knows? The way my luck is going lately, I could come back with braces.

Glasses and braces at the same time. Hello, Jan Brady.

I want lasik but I spent all the lasik money on bridges and braces.

Used to be afraid, but I hate my glasses so much that I'm ready to roll the dice.

Got dam. Won't happen before the wedding, but I will ditch these worthless, godforsaken, glasses.

Used to have 20/20..............

Glasses aren't so bad, TWC. I think men look very distinguished, intelligent, and attractive with glasses. Smart men are terribly sexy.

I used to have 20/20 too. It's not that my eyes are so bad, but they get tired and don't focus right or something. And the doc said it's my transitioning from close to far away that is lazy. The later it gets in the day, the more blurry things get.

Of course, that could be the wine too ;-)

but they get tired and don't focus right or something.

I get that - especially when I spend too much time in front of the computer. But I also have presbyopia, or "old eyes," which makes it difficult to focus close up - like for reading books. Plus I seem to need more light to see anything these days. And I've always been nearsighted since I was a kid - have to wear glasses to drive. On top of all that I have degeneration in both retinas - especially the right eye - and there isn't much that can be done about it even if I had the money to pay for it. Aging is so much fun.

You should rest your eyes more. An opthamologist once told me the most restful thing for the eyes is to watch television or go to the movies. He said one of the most stressful or tiring things is reading. Just opposite what they told us as kids: "You watch too much tv - it's bad for your eyes!"

I've worn glasses since I was a wee lad. Near sighted. I can see *ok* but can't read signs and the detail of movies, tv and distant vistas get kind of blurry. At work, inside a room, I usually set my glasses down and leave them down all day.

Oddly, I can read fine without any glasses. A slight magnification is a bit better, but unnecessary.

I do have a lazy focus, which manifests itself mostly during quick-cut movie trailers and music videos. I hate 'em. Try to focus 'pon the hot babe and it cuts to something else. What? Who knows because before I can focus on it, it cuts to yet something else.

Change the channel.

I tried contacts several times, but they're a pain to deal with.

Lasic? If I can find enough money for it, I see a chrome thingie for my car, or maybe a new handgun.....

I swear I know that little girl from somewhere.

Might be the wine (as you say). That would be a benefit for my woman. Blurry vision keeps me looking good. :-)

You're a sweet one, now aren't you?

I can picture you in John Lennon glasses (if I knew what you looked like). We also called them Granny Glasses (or were the granny glasses the square ones)?

BTW, is that you hiding in the red plaid? I think it is.

I just hate glasses. The lenses always dirty (or falling out), the frames are always crappy and cost four zillion dollars. The lab never makes them right. And worse: when you're down in the corner under a counter, in an awkward position with a wrench or a screwdriver you cannot see what you need to see because the glasses are not in the right place on your face.

Plus, they make you fall down. I have to take my glasses off to climb rocks, stairs, or scramble down the side of the hill. I can trip over linoleum as it is, but wearing progressives on uneven ground is a death sentence.

I've got reading and computer and progressives and progressive sun glasses. The shades are the only ones that are made half way decent and they seem to be holding up pretty well. I told them to make them with just a smidge of reading at the bottom of the lens. Did they honor my wishes? Hell no. I need distance and midrange (to see the dashboard). I'm not going to be reading a paperback while driving.

Oh and my Eye MD go really uppity when I made a joke about smoking pot for glaucoma. Stern lecture and denial followed.

You mileage may vary. I've said that twice in 24 hours. Sorry.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Have a cheery afternoon.

I thought the same thing - or rather, I've seen that kid's picture somewhere.

I know just what you mean, TWC. Why is it that the gold-plated, designer-name frames which cost a mint are the ones that fall apart within a month? The screws that hold them together strip out and the lens falls out. Yet the frames of the cheap, made-in-China, non-prescription drugstore "cheaters" and safety glasses never seem to come apart. And why is it that prescription lenses can not be put into these robust frames? Is it because the opticians can't make any money that way?

I don't know who the little girl is. I googled "girl in glasses" and her pic came up. I thought she was adorable, so I had to post her.

Not me in the red plaid. Y'all know I'm not going to post pics of me on the net. Nuh-uh, no way.

TWC, if your glasses are making you fall down, I don't think they're the correct prescription. That just can't be right. But then I'm a glasses novice, so I could end up falling down too.
