Vegas Newspaper Served Subpoena to Identify Online Commenters

This story concerns comments made about an ongoing income tax fraud case. The Feds want the names and personal information of several anonymous commenters who made derogatory comments and who the Feds claim made "threats." One of the items of personal information demanded is the credit card account number of these people.

Now why would the Feds want to know that? Well one thought that comes to mind is they wish to check if these people have been making expenditures incommensurate with their reported incomes. In other words, they want to see if there isn't some basis for the IRS to bring tax fraud charges against them, or otherwise harass them.

It boils down to this: If one exercises one's free speech rights to criticize the Federal government and the IRS, one may find oneself subject to audit, investigation and other persecution designed to shut one up. I had always thought that to be illegal, but I'm sure a mealy-mouthed government lawyer can find some way to double-talk his way around any legal obstacles. They always do.

Smartass, I'll admit that I've become very careful about what I say and how I say it when voicing my discontent with the government nowadays, both online and over the phone with the Captain in one of our heated government conversations.

It's just too scary now....it's all happening.

SA, The Review Journal is a libertarian paper so they ain't likely to fork over the info.

Col, the ACS (automated collection service) office locations are not made public. You can't find out the exact location.

LC, I think it's foolish to advertise. This day and age your car better not sport a bumper sticker that says; Insured By Smith & Wesson or Grow In Peace.

I think it is both worse and better. If you are in the crosshairs you're screwed. Just keep a low profile and go about your business.

Lol! It does seem that if they can demand such, then so should we.

Twc, I agree about not advertising. Although I'm not too good about restraining myself on my blog, I would never put anything on my car. I'd be harassed, cut off, flipped off, and vandalized every time I drove into Memphis.
