The Best Picture of Mount Everest Ever

Check this out. This is way cool. I have to link to it, because it's too wide to fit on my page.

Mount Everest from one mile above

That is an amazing shot. You can even see the curve of the earth.

Sometimes I can totally relate to this little girl.

Uh-oh...Obama got a little angry today

I knew I'd seen that hand gesture before....

Elephants outside the window

I'm working on my scrapbook project today, sorting through old clippings and things and scanning them into my computer.

I found something that I'm glad I saved.

When I lived in downtown Memphis, I had an apartment right above the river and Riverside Drive. The train yard was just over the edge of the bluff from me, and the Memphis Pyramid was up the street. I remember seeing this sight from my balcony. It was such a fun thing to see. I love elephants.

Click on the pic to see it better.

Living downtown was fun, when I was younger.

Those Rednecks Don't Ski

I have a t-shirt with that picture on it. It's sort of a local cultural icon.

From the National Weather Service....

"SUNSHINE AND FEW CLOUDS. HOT. HIGH 99F. WINDS WSW 5 TO 10 MPH. A HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING. A STRONG UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL BRING HOT TEMPERATURES TO THE MID-SOUTH TODAY. GULF HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 90S TO PRODUCE A HEAT INDEX OF 105 TO 108 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON."

I woke up in a scowly mood this morning. Bah humbug on everything. I hate summer. Every time I go out the door I'm attacked by kamikaze mosquitoes with a six foot wingspan. I've got nine mosquito bites on my legs, I'm itching, it's hot as hell, the sun's glare makes my eyes and head hurt, my hair is like a sauna on my neck, so I'll have a perpetual ponytail for the next three months, and getting dressed up to go anywhere is useless because all clothes are uncomfortable and look like a wrinkled, damp wad of dish towels five minutes after going out the door.

It's even too hot to drink coffee. I'm having an RC for breakfast.

I'm so ready for October.

Wish I was there

Sunny and 63 degrees today in Oak Harbor, Washington.

More tests today for Mom, a possible bone marrow extraction. I don't know, but there's a part of me that wonders if the torture of such a thing is really the best thing for her. It's a part of me that I keep quiet and hidden, though.

She will be first in my thoughts while I'm sitting around that hospital waiting area, but in the back of my mind I can't help but dwell about scenes such as these.

I pretty much keep quiet about these thoughts too.

Cold, cold, rainy day

The Captain has gone back to Washington to start wrapping up things there, selling the house, moving arrangements, etc. I am alone in my house again. It's quieter than it ever was after having him here the past 40 days or so. He had a horrible trip back with snow delays, over-heated planes, and low blood sugar because he didn't have time to eat in between flights. I don't like him being up there by himself, feeling tired and sick, and I'm not there to take care of him. We've gotten used to existing together. Funny how a couple of months can do that to you. We were inseparable almost the whole time he was here.

Yes, we had arguments. A couple of humdingers too, but we made up. (that's the best part :-)

And now I have a wedding to plan. We have a date in mind, but it's not for sure, so I'm not saying it out loud to anyone yet. We're keeping it small, though. Family and close friends. An elegantly informal, afternoon wedding in a chapel on a shaded southern street with azaleas blooming all around. I'm hoping for a breezy day.

I was thinking there would only be about 50 people on the guest list, but then the Captain reminded me that Christmas Eve hosted about 25 people in my house, and that was just my immediate family, not even into the cousins or aunts and uncles yet.

If I didn't think it would horribly disappoint my mother and father, I swear we'd just elope. But besides that, my Captain says he wants to see me walking down the aisle in a pretty dress. I told him I'd wear a simple ivory tea length dress. No giant snowbeast creation for me.

Speaking of horrible dresses....

It's like a Barbie lab experiment gone horribly wrong, ala Weird Science.
